If your husky is dumb you might be wondering why and what can be done about it.

In this post, I will show you a number of reasons why your husky might be dumb and what you can do about it.

So, why is my husky dumb? Possible reasons are that it hasn’t been trained enough or that it was trained in the wrong way, you have inadvertently reinforced the behavior, it might need more exercise or it might behave that way naturally.

There are actually a number of reasons why your husky might be doing it but there are a number of things that you can consider in order to help figure out why.

Why your husky is dumb

Each of the different reasons that your husky is dumb will likely come with some clues.

Below are a number of possible reasons that it is dumb and what would make them more likely.

Nature

There are some things that dogs will naturally do that seem stupid to us such as to eat dirt. However, there are often reasons that they do it.

For example, many experts think that dogs sometimes eat dirt since it can contain nutrients that they need or so that they make themselves throw up.

If there is something in particular that your husky does that seems dumb then it is likely that other dogs have done it in the past. It would help to see if there is an explanation for it online or if it seems unhealthy it would help to consult with a vet.

It didn’t socialize much as a puppy

If your husky did not socialize much with other people or dogs as a puppy it might not have learned how to interact with them. This would be more likely if you got it from an early age and you know that it did not socialize much and if the way that it is dumb is by doing things such as acting unusually around other people and pets.

In this case, it would help to let it socialize in a controlled environment whenever possible and to train it to behave the way that you expect.

You haven’t trained it

If you have not trained your husky to behave in a certain way it will not know how it is meant to behave. If it has not received much training, it would be less likely that it is actually dumb and more likely that you just need to train it to behave the way that you want.

You trained it the wrong way

If you did train your husky, it could be the case that you trained it in the wrong way.

When training your husky it is important to do things such as to take small steps and not to ask too much of it too soon otherwise it won’t know what you want it to do.

Additionally, it might be the case that you gave it confusing commands, didn’t use the right rewards or that you inadvertently rewarded it for not doing what you wanted as well.

You haven’t trained it in multiple locations

When training your husky it is important to train it in multiple locations. When starting out it would help to start in an environment without many distractions and then to build up to environments when there are distractions.

If you ask it to behave in a certain way in a distracting environment without training it in one, it is unlike that it will be able to keep its focus on you.

It needs more exercise

Huskies are a breed that requires a lot of exercise to be properly stimulated. If your husky is not getting enough exercise it could be causing it to struggle to keep its focus on you.

Generally, it is recommended for huskies to get at least an hour of exercise per day. If your husky is not getting that much it would help to make sure that it does.

You have been negatively reinforcing the behavior

It might be the case that it acts in a dumb way because you have been inadvertently reinforcing the behavior. If you give it things such as toys, treats or attention when it acts dumb it might learn that being dumb gets it what it wants so it does it more.

Instead of rewarding it when it acts dumb try to use positive reinforcement training to get it to behave the way that you want it to.

Things to consider

Below are some things to consider in order to help figure out why it acts dumb.

Consider how it is dumb

When trying to figure out why your husky acts in a dumb way it would help to consider in what way it acts dumb.

For example, It is normal for dogs to bark at things that don’t move. Whereas, if it is dumb in that it doesn’t follow your command then it would be more likely that you need to train it more.

If it became dumb suddenly

If your husky started being dumb suddenly it would help to consider what changed at around the same time that it started being dumb.

If it did start doing it suddenly, it could be due to things such as inadvertently rewarding the behavior. However, it could also be due to things such as illness or injury so, if you’re not sure why it started doing it, the best option would be to take it to a vet.

How old your husky is

It would also help to consider the age of your husky. If it is still young then it will be more likely to do dumb things since it has not learned how it is meant to act yet. If it is young, now would be a good time to start training it to behave the way that you want it to.

If it is old, it would be more likely that it either does it because you have inadvertently reinforced the behavior or because it is actually a natural thing that dogs do.

How to get your husky to be less dumb

Below are some options that you have when trying to get your husky to be less dumb.

Train it using positive reinforcement training

Positive reinforcement training is where you get your husky to behave in a certain way by rewarding it for showing signs of behaving that way and not rewarding it when it does not.

To use it to get your husky to stop being dumb you would reward it when it shows signs of not doing the dumb thing and avoid rewarding it when it does.

Avoid reinforcing bad behaviors

As mentioned above, it could be the case that you have inadvertently trained it to do dumb things by rewarding it when it does them. Instead, try to recognize when it is about to be dumb and to redirect its focus onto something else such as coming to you.

Ensure that you are feeding it correctly

It could be the case that an issue with its diet is causing it to behave abnormally. This would be more likely if it started acting differently when you started feeding it differently. You can look here to see what you should be feeding your husky.

Ensure that it is getting enough exercise

As mentioned above it is important to make sure that your husky is getting a lot of exercise on a daily basis. If it is not getting much exercise it would be important to start walking it yourself or to get a dog walker to do it for you.

Take it to a vet

If your husky started acting dumb suddenly, you can’t figure out the cause or it has been showing signs of illness or injury, the best option would be to take it to a vet. By doing so you will be able to rule out medical causes and you will be able to get expert advice tailored to your particular husky.
